Illusory Cog, an independent label owned and operated by fashion designer Vanessa Mifsud, takes its primary inspiration from prominent Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali and his collaboration with the ‘father of psychoanalysis’ Sigmund Freud.
During the 1920s, Dali and Freud shared ideas based around paranoia. The ‘illusory’ part of the label name represents the illusion in Dali’s paintings and ‘cog’ represents the irrational that occurs when paranoid people see images incorrectly.
Illusory Cog’s design aesthetic appeals to those 25 to 35, crossing a diverse range of interests and professions. Vanessa designs to empower women of all body shapes and sizes. Garments incorporate dart manipulation techniques, to flatter the human form.
All Illusory Cog fashion is designed and manufactured in Canberra. Pieces are custom made or one-off pieces, and the choice of fabric and construction techniques of a high quality.
Vanessa graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design), from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) in 2014.
